A fuckin' comedic genius for sure.
98% of the time he's not even riffing, he's just "telling it like it is".
The references & comparisons to the late, great Bill Hicks can stop now, cuz for my $$$, Stanhope is even more "real" - especially when he starts frying on acid halfway through his set...
Your average joe-type for sure, but he's spot-fuckin' on when he spits it.
There's a million rappers out there AIN'T this real, son!
DANE FUCKING COOK HE AIN'T, SO IF YOU THINK HE'S FUNNY - GET THE FUCK OUT!
Hells yeah, I loved his rant on religion. I believe it was entitled "Fuck your God" on youtube.
ReplyDeleteI just got to when the acid kicks in and I have to say this might be one of my favorite sets next to the Austin Incident. Thanks for posting this.
ReplyDeleteHANS - If you could send me a D/L to the Austin Incident, I would be stoked. Can't track that thing down anywhere, and I must have 10 of his shows...
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you can help, thanks!
I actually had the DVD but lost it while moving a couple years back. If I can track it down I'll see what I can do.
ReplyDeletethanks for this...been meaning to check him out for a while to see if he really is bills successor
ReplyDeleteyep, he's got 'it'...i know he gets a lot of hicks comparisons but i think he would've come about with or without bill's existence...they would have made the greatest stand up double bill of all time...i would crawl across 100 metres of broken glass to see that
ReplyDeleteany idea where i can get anymore of his stuff?
I guess there has to be a benchmark or something, so Stanhope gets compared to Hicks, but one of the big differences I see is that Doug is getting a bit more acknowledgement NOW while he is still ALIVE - sad that people get on the bandwagon after death - poor Mitch Hedberg as well, another genius.
ReplyDeleteStanhope to me is more relevant to my life than Hicks was - maybe because he is a grating prick in his delivery (reminds me of myself), ha ha!
well said...and as much as i loved bill (and actually got to see him in the flesh about 6 months before he died) the fact that he's deified as a comedy god would have been anathema to him because he knew that the 'art' is one of constant evolution...i think he would've loved stanhope and been pissed that he gets so many comparisons
ReplyDeletenever heard of mitch hedberg so i'm now gonna check him out...thanks for the tip and great blog by the way
