LAUGHING HYENAS.

A wonderful band I had the chance to experience many times as a rowdy young "townie" whilst fucking up through some of my earlier post-high school formative years back in A2, MI.
The Hyenas were always down to hang out, drink your beer, and "crush your muggles".

Larissa Stolarchuk was punker than you'll never be.

Here's an excellent sounding live recording from one of the stronger eras of the band. I grabbed this a few years ago from a wonderful blog that no longer exists.
I'd like to thank AHEM for this if you're out there - you were one of my early inspirations for blogging as you set the bar high...

NEGATIVE GAIN.

Early eighties hardcore skate-thrashers from Toronto who had chops beyond their (mid-teens when they recorded this!) years - not unlike their 'Nucker bretheren Beyond Possession, but a bit more 'core than metal.

You know they were good, 'cuz this came out on the Pusmort label...

NEUROSIS.

There's not much that need to be said about these guys.
They pretty much have their own "cult" per se, and while I do enjoy seeing them live (these days), it's the old stuff that I really go back to again & again.

Neurosis took the apocalypse-core sound way-the-fuck beyond (and back again), but here's the blood-and-grit-covered early sound of what was to come...

KRAUT.

Early NYHC band featuring Doug Holland who would later go on to play guitar in the Kings of NYHC, the Cro-Mags.

A little-known fact about Kraut:
Their first live performance was opening for the fuckin' Clash(!) during their unheard-of-these-days 17-night stand at Bond's Casino (r.i.p.) in NYC back in 1981.

Here's a nice collection of their material spanning their whole career; you rarely see this one around, nor does this band get much credit in the annals of hardcore.

Enjoy.

BUTTERGLOVE.

Pen Rollings.
You may know him better as "The Godfather of Math-Rock".

This here's a long-lost & way-out-of-print GEM that this dude Bob turned me on to a few years ago after I had traded him an Honor Role show.

In return, he upped my game by schooling me with this.

I had originally lost this bad boy during "The Great Hard Drive Crash of 2007", but with the help of the internet, FaceBook, and my spotty memory/mind, I was able to track down good 'ol Bob. In a flash he stepped up to the plate and blessed me w/ a fresh rip to share with y'alls.

In my opinion, this could be Pen's greatest body of guitar work, and as far as "math rock" goes, this one stretches the genre a bit with it's trippy, spaced-out heaviness.

I'll just leave this one up to you to figure it out for yourselves...

GRAVEN IMAGE.

One of the original RVA HC bands, Graven Image never got the credit they deserved for their frantic style of hardcore.

Today I present to you both the gem-of-a-release known as the "Kicked Out of the Scene" Ep as well as their side of the "Your Skull Is My Bowl" split cassette they released with fellow area stalwarts, Honor Role.

The EP rip sounds good, while the cassette rip is not so good, but it IS good - you know what I mean?

Anyways, I'm looking forward to hearing from any of you Richmond cats filling me in on some stories, etc.

*I'D ALSO APPRECIATE IT IF SOMEONE WOULD SEND ME THE "BUTTERGLOVE - THE JOHN MORAND SESSIONS".*

HIATUS.

Man, I been pulling out the old shit lately, huh?

Here's the final output from one of the greatest crust bands ever; full of raging hooks and all-around power, Hiatus did it like no one else.

(It's really hard to find much on the web about these guys, maybe you could hook me up with more of their stuff - I'd like that).

OLHO SECO.

Today I compel you all to indulge in the primitive roots of one of Brazil's earliest purveyors of fine hardcore, Olho Seco.

While these are early recordings that sound raw and lean on the sonic side of things, the energy and passion carry the goods.
Shades of the power yet to come; any doubts?

Just check their work on the classic HC comp "MRR presents Welcome to 1984"...
