SARCOFAGO.

This record was recorded on Satan's Wax-Cylinder Dictophone itself...
1987?
Brazil?
FUCK YES!

The guitars / bass / drums played on this recording were complete enemies - there is no "in unison attack here".
Said / alleged instruments attacked the fuck out of each other at all times, unreleting in their pursuit of domination!

Vocals that barely range out of the "I just got punched hard & repeatedly in the throat" area, but when it does venture up from the decrepit cesspool, they go for the outer orbits & hit that "angel screaming/dying in slow-and-painful agony" zone.

At times, this record almost sounds as though it is playing at the wrong speed - but man - it is SO fucking RIGHT

VENOM.

Okay, so it's been awhile since the last post - nothing new about that - but I've been in Detroit & Mid-Michigan revisiting the family / old friends / new friends / dive bars old & new.

During a moment of clarity between the beer runs & bar runs, I split from my Mom's farm & headed in to "the city" for some free Wi-Fi action at the Wirt Public Library in Bay City & I posted up a little classic-something for you - enjoy!

"Lay down your souls to the gods rock 'n roll!

Metal ten fold through the deadly black hole,

Riding hell's stallions bareback and free.

Taking our chances with raw energy"...

HYPOCRISY.

Brutally heavy & sinfully harmonious at the same time?
It must be Sweden's Hypocrisy we're talking about.

There's a few different versions of this band sound-wise, and while I dig the early satanic-leaning material, this record sounds fucking HUGE.
The drums on this underrated release are standout for sure; the battery is relentless, the vocals top-notch, the riffs keep coming, & the leads "take you there".

Melodic Death Metal hardly gets my blood boiling - in fact, I am usually a non-fan of it - but Hypocrisy has always brought something heavier & deeper - the mix is always spot-fucking on w/ these dudes as well.

If you missed this, check it out.
There is a cold blackness about this that is refreshing without being cliche'.

BONE AWL.

There's not much going on in Novato, CA on most days.
It certainly isn't a "happening" place, there's no "scene" to speak of, and that makes it the perfect place to start your "KVLT" Black Metal band if you are Bone Awl!

In a genre quickly becoming the flavor of the week, Bone Awl skips all the usual trappings of subscribing to the narrow view / belief patterns of the movement, and their sound? Well, that's on another level too.
A shit-ton of cassette only releases, etc. only adds to the mystery behind these Bay Area cave-dwelling black mashers.

Check the cold raw hypnotic stylings for yourself, right here, on this cool live on-air radio set...

NEUROSIS.

There's not much that need to be said about these guys.
They pretty much have their own "cult" per se, and while I do enjoy seeing them live (these days), it's the old stuff that I really go back to again & again.

Neurosis took the apocalypse-core sound way-the-fuck beyond (and back again), but here's the blood-and-grit-covered early sound of what was to come...

UPDATE 04.28.2009: LINK REMOVED BY REQUEST OF THE BAND - WISH GRANTED.

BUTTERGLOVE.

Pen Rollings.
You may know him better as "The Godfather of Math-Rock".

This here's a long-lost & way-out-of-print GEM that this dude Bob turned me on to a few years ago after I had traded him an Honor Role show.

In return, he upped my game by schooling me with this.

I had originally lost this bad boy during "The Great Hard Drive Crash of 2007", but with the help of the internet, FaceBook, and my spotty memory/mind, I was able to track down good 'ol Bob. In a flash he stepped up to the plate and blessed me w/ a fresh rip to share with y'alls.

In my opinion, this could be Pen's greatest body of guitar work, and as far as "math rock" goes, this one stretches the genre a bit with it's trippy, spaced-out heaviness.

I'll just leave this one up to you to figure it out for yourselves...

GORGOROTH.

The latest (and last) offering from one of the "classic" Black Metal bands.
This thing was released for a short time before they decided to call it a day due to conflict within the band.
While this is far from being one of their best releases, the set list on this covers alot of their catalogue. Politics aside, these guys have always kicked my ass throughout their run; ain't many BM bands I can say that about these days.

Gorgoroth - True Norwegian Black Metal: Live in Grieghallen

Now playing: Hirax - Kill Switch

YAOTL MICTLAN.

Some seriously awesome blackened death metal with an "indigenous peoples' of Mexico" twist to it, via sacred drums, bones & flutes all up in the mix - along with the Spanish vocals.
Do NOT think Brujeria here, okay?
This is THE REAL SHIT.
Heavy and atmospheric and rich with the blood of a million human sacrifices - what???

GLORIOR BELLI.

If you're gonna fuck around with "Troo" Black Metal, a solid choice woild be these guys. Icy cold riffage that stays pretty true to the genre interspersed with plenty of stark and sinister quiet(ish) parts to keep it interesting. These guys have never let me down, and while I used to listen to fuckloads of BM, I am super picky about who gets my ear-time these days.
Heavy - and EVIL...

ORENDA.

I used to listen to alot of black metal over the last few years, but seemed to have burned out on it a bit lately. Bands like Orenda - who hail from Bulgaria of all places - seem to push the envelope of the genre while at the the same time staying "troo" to the whole "kvlt" aspect of the (menatlly) limited genre.
Check it out, some excellent mid-tempo cold and blackened stuff...

DEBRIS INC.

Some of the "dirtiest players in the game" make up the brutal wall of mud known as Debris Inc. Filthy heavy doom punk that'll make you laugh your ass off at times.
Someday, you'll wish you owned this one "back in the day" so grab it now...

CAPRICORNS.

While it seems that there is a trend in heavy music ("instru-metal") as of late, these guys don't suffer from the pretentious trappings that most of those other/more "famous" bands suffer from.
These guys are more than capable of writing sick riffs and songs that actually go somewhere.
I hope they put out something new - soon, please - as I have played the shit out of this over the last year and a half.

Lazy bastards!

DARKTHRONE.

I'm sure there's a ton of D.T. haters out there, saying "they aren't kvlt enough any more" or whatever - fuck that shit anyways.
I DIG the muddy blackened punk-scuzz metal they did on their last record and this one is EVEN BETTER!

DISSECTION.

Don't you just love it when you're going through your music collection and you find a "long lost album"? One that makes you go, "How the fuck did I forget about THIS!?!"

Dissection is one of those bands that did what sooo many "kvlt" black metal motherfuckers T-R-Y to do...

I miss this band.

STINKING LIZAVETA.

Crazy ass three-piece instrumental doom/jazz/metal from Phladelphia PA.
With a mojo (not so much in sound, but in "feel") akin to the infamous Dead Moon, they transcend being "just another rock band" - that's special indeed...

MELECHESH.

These guys hail from Jerusalem, and refer to themselves as "Masters of Sumerian Black Metal" which to these ears equates to blackened death metal with some Middle Eastern rhythms weaved throughout the record to put a unique twist on things. Good stuff, check it out!

HIGH ON FIRE.

Not much I need to say here, they just get better with each record - not many bands can say that. Can't go wrong any of their records, and "Death Is This Communion" is even better than the last one (weakest one in my opinion).
*Dig through my chat box for a D/L link for D.I.T.C. if you don't have it yet.*

Did you know that High On Fire took their name from Matt's obsession with the Electric Light Orchestra song, Fire On High? True story...

WOBURN HOUSE.

German dudes who make bands like Isis & Pelican look like fools.
These guys also have a dynamic Black Metal band by the name of Klabautamann which pretty much transcends the limits of that genre, and without the typical cliches. I'll post some of that stuff soon, but in the meantime check this out...
