Completely off-the-radar - and off their rockers - these guys bust out an acidic blend of classic grindcore that hints at the greats such as vintage Napalm Death & at-their-best Nasum.

Fuckin' take that, brand-new-neck-tattoo-slash-mathematical-haircut-guy!

VOIVOD.

Found this one recently via some BT action, and I'm pretty stoked as I was at this show.

Not alot I can tell you about it, but I do remember that also on this bill were Soundgarden & Danzig -(WTF!?!)- and the only band I watched that night was Voivod, so I can tell you that they were pretty amazing.

The shitty part is that this show went down during the heyday of Soundgarden's recent major-label signing, so the metalheads weren't really there - it was a ton of grunge-wimps & their chicks lookin' to get a glimpse of Chris Cornell's little-boy chest...

What I do remember is this:
1). Smoking down in the sub-zero temps in the back lot of St. Andy's -(an amazing place to see a band, for sure, one of the best without a doubt).
2). Drinking Black Label from a frosted half-shell at the old-man bar next door to St. Andrew's (that I can no longer for the life of me remember the name of), before gulping down some mushrooms with John Brannon (in the Laughing Hyenas at the time) in the bathroom before heading back to St. Andy's for Voivod.

They melted my face off, yes, Voivod did.
So did the mushrooms, of course.

But what about Danzig, you say?
Well, I can't remember because if shit-memory serves me right, I had taken off w/ Swanky Jim (from Cum Dumpster) & his girlfriend Peg (from the Gories) to go smoke some hash at their place.
She later threw a knife at me, barely missing my foot.
Good times.
I guess I do remember a few things from that night, huh.

Listening to this set -nineteen fucking years later HOLY SHIT- I'd have to say it was a ripper for sure, and I gotta tell ya I really, really, miss bands like this, times like that, the old crew, etc.

LAUGHING HYENAS.

A wonderful band I had the chance to experience many times as a rowdy young "townie" whilst fucking up through some of my earlier post-high school formative years back in A2, MI.
The Hyenas were always down to hang out, drink your beer, and "crush your muggles".

Larissa Stolarchuk was punker than you'll never be.

Here's an excellent sounding live recording from one of the stronger eras of the band. I grabbed this a few years ago from a wonderful blog that no longer exists.
I'd like to thank AHEM for this if you're out there - you were one of my early inspirations for blogging as you set the bar high...

While I've never been the biggest fan of The Ramones, their early material was indeed fucking "ALL THAT", and this thirty-year-old recording of them in action at a small Michigan club proves it.

You WILL be amazed by the sound quality of this thing, and the band is tight as fuck - the cover art is STELLAR too, by the way ;)

That experience made my 14 year-old mind re-think what music was all about.

BOOM & THE LEGION OF DOOM.

Early 80's violent/drug-addled/mentally-disturbed/slightly inbred/butcher-as-a-day-job/chaotic hardcore freaks from the predominently "born-again/ cult of Amway" western side of Michigan.
Never really appreciated or accepted by "the scene", they eventually made their way out to San Francisco - only to be (for the most part) unaccepted here as well.

Some members have returned to the backwoods of MI, while others linger on in perpetual SF punker limbo.
Others have moved to Hawaii and become real estate magnate-slash-artists.

Rumor has it there will be a reunion in the fall of this year in S.F.

DISSONANCE.

While these guys (and girl) were a few years older than myself - and 50 miles away - I somehow always ended up hitching a ride (or scamming some artsy girl into driving to Flint) to see some of my first real hardcore shows, and Dissonance was usually on the bill.
I saw them open for 7 Seconds, Corrosion of Conformity, Raw Power and many other "classic" hardcore bands.

For me, Dissonance was more than just a band.
Phil & Tanya (drums and bass, respectively) were very much responsible for their being any hardcore scene in Flint - well, them and Doug 'Wyatt" Earp - who owned the only cool record store (Wyatt Earp) for nearly 100 miles around.

(I think it's pretty safe to say there would be no scene to speak of (north of A2 / Detroit) without the afforementioned folks - you can add Ben "Rivethead" Hamper and Michael "Roger and Me" Moore to the list of Flint HC alumni as well).

Dissonance was really about having a good time and not worrying about "being cool", and that energy inspired alot of people to start their own bands as well.

If it weren't for Wyatt Earp Records and skateboarding, I might have missed out on all of this, but when I think back on those nihilistic (and weed-filled) days before "I got my shit together", my reality was filled with sleeping all day, road-tripping, and skating all night.
The soundtrack usually was courtesy of these guys, who quite possibly could be my all-time favorite hardcore band...

Not alot of web presence for these semi-obscure early 80's western Michigan hardcore punkers.
I will say that this cassette stands the test of time. I'm guessing this is from around 1983 or so, I lost the artwork a long time ago...
