WAYNE KRAMER.

As a kid growing up in a no-way-out / burned-out General Motors town in mid-Michigan, The Brother Wayne Kramer always "spoke" to me. His playing in the MC5 fanned the flames of many a revolt in the Seventies; be them political demonstrations, or of "the innner self".
Sadly, the MC5 went down in flames like only they could do it - they will always be legend.

They don't make protest bands anymore, kid.

Wayne has been there & done that more than twice, and has played with the likes of everyone from GG Allin to Red Rodney to Johnny Thunders to The Melvins & quite a few other bad-asses in between. These days, he spends most of his time giving hope to "correctional facility" prisoners via his Jail Guitar Doors foundation, as well as scoring the music for the "television-awesomeness" known as Eastbound & Down.

The man has risen from a dark past - to shine like a motherfucker - to say the least.

Ain't nothin' wrong with that - most of us can only hope to attain some semblance of inner peace, right?

Way, way, WAY back in the day before this British Punk Icon hawked butter to the masses, John Lydon had a pretty remarkable band that sounded like no one else.

Here's a kick-ass live recording from a roller rink I used to go to as a kid now & then.
This was a bit before my time - I was 12 when this was recorded - but the most amazing part of it (besides how fucking GOOD the music is) is that this roller rink was a total throwback in time.
It had to have been pretty stellar to have witnessed these posh motherfuckers in action...

VOIVOD.

Found this one recently via some BT action, and I'm pretty stoked as I was at this show.

Not alot I can tell you about it, but I do remember that also on this bill were Soundgarden & Danzig -(WTF!?!)- and the only band I watched that night was Voivod, so I can tell you that they were pretty amazing.

The shitty part is that this show went down during the heyday of Soundgarden's recent major-label signing, so the metalheads weren't really there - it was a ton of grunge-wimps & their chicks lookin' to get a glimpse of Chris Cornell's little-boy chest...

What I do remember is this:
1). Smoking down in the sub-zero temps in the back lot of St. Andy's -(an amazing place to see a band, for sure, one of the best without a doubt).
2). Drinking Black Label from a frosted half-shell at the old-man bar next door to St. Andrew's (that I can no longer for the life of me remember the name of), before gulping down some mushrooms with John Brannon (in the Laughing Hyenas at the time) in the bathroom before heading back to St. Andy's for Voivod.

They melted my face off, yes, Voivod did.
So did the mushrooms, of course.

But what about Danzig, you say?
Well, I can't remember because if shit-memory serves me right, I had taken off w/ Swanky Jim (from Cum Dumpster) & his girlfriend Peg (from the Gories) to go smoke some hash at their place.
She later threw a knife at me, barely missing my foot.
Good times.
I guess I do remember a few things from that night, huh.

Listening to this set -nineteen fucking years later HOLY SHIT- I'd have to say it was a ripper for sure, and I gotta tell ya I really, really, miss bands like this, times like that, the old crew, etc.

THE STOOGES.

To me, this is the best of the lot as far as Stooges bootlegs go.
I probably listen to this more than any other Stooges release out there.
The mix is dirty - just like the music itself.

FORCED ANGER.

One of Detroit's best-kept secrets as far as hardcore bands go.

Probably the first "punk show" I ever witnessed was these guys, Dissonance, & The Crucifucks.

I got to know know the singer Nate 'Puker" over the years, and would stay at his place on occasion.
We would always drink too much and go to the donut shop on the corner near his house. One cold January day while walking back to his crib, the cops rolled up the back alley behind his house and in the dumpster they found some "fresh hooker parts".

I don't think the Detroit Hooker Serial Killer was ever caught.
Good times in The Motor City...

UGLY BUT PROUD.

Once upon a time there was this wicked thrash band from Detroit.
They fucking slayed the place, put out a record on the legendary Michigan label Depression Records (of which I will post more from at a later date), moved to San Francisco, killed it there, and then I think they just kind of imploded, and went back to Detroit.

They put out another version of these recordings with a somewhat different line-up, but it doesn't come close to the power they harnessed on these sessions.

For all I know the recording I have posted may have never seen an actual "official" release - they were slated to come out on Depression records as well, but the band went down in flames before that could happen.

Enjoy a great lost piece of Detroit Thrash history that still stands tall today...

A band that certainly needs no introduction, here's probably the only other CD you need by them besides the also-excellent "Total Recall" collection.

These guys probably influenced more hardcore bands than any other - no doubt about it - and John Brannon can scrape a bong cleaner than anyone else I have seen in my life...

While this record is almost 10 years old now, it still doesn't get the respect it so rightly deserves, and belongs up there somewhere between Dystopia & Phobia - at least in my eyes it does.

Man, the Detroit music "scene" could sure use another band like these guys after the embarassment that cock-smokers like Big Chief, Eminem, I.C.P., Kid Rock & the White Stripes have made of the history of Motor City music, that's for sure.

Underrated and under-appreciated powerful emotive hardcore (without being pussies and minus the haircuts/eyeliner/womens' jeans)...

LAUGHING HYENAS.

Dirty blues-punk from the over-educated-and expensive-to-live-there-now town of Ann Arbor, MI.
If ever there was a tumultuous band, it would be these folks. Plenty of line-up changes over the years, as well as a change in sound towards the end, here's their first record, complete with a few bonus tracks including what may be their greatest (and truest) opus - "Don't Bogue My High".
