VOIVOD.

Everyone who visits here has a favorite era of Voivod (I'm assuming, of course).

I myself was weaned on those first three records in their discography, and it is hard for me to say those aren't my favorite, but when it comes down to it, I pretty much celebrate their entire recorded output.

I have a bunch of muddy-sounding live tapes from The Eighties that will always be some of my favorite musical things to listen to, and while Angel Rat is a record I don't pull out often, the demos for that recording have been quite compelling to these ears as of late. Gone from this one is the icy-screech of bitter cold Canadian thrash; in its place we find a spaced-out & discordant Die Kreuzen-meets-King Crimson vibe.

To put it in layman's terms,it kinda feels like you're riding out an opium high while floating along in arctic waters on a slab of sheered-off glacial ice, per se'…

VOIVOD.

Found this one recently via some BT action, and I'm pretty stoked as I was at this show.

Not alot I can tell you about it, but I do remember that also on this bill were Soundgarden & Danzig -(WTF!?!)- and the only band I watched that night was Voivod, so I can tell you that they were pretty amazing.

The shitty part is that this show went down during the heyday of Soundgarden's recent major-label signing, so the metalheads weren't really there - it was a ton of grunge-wimps & their chicks lookin' to get a glimpse of Chris Cornell's little-boy chest...

What I do remember is this:
1). Smoking down in the sub-zero temps in the back lot of St. Andy's -(an amazing place to see a band, for sure, one of the best without a doubt).
2). Drinking Black Label from a frosted half-shell at the old-man bar next door to St. Andrew's (that I can no longer for the life of me remember the name of), before gulping down some mushrooms with John Brannon (in the Laughing Hyenas at the time) in the bathroom before heading back to St. Andy's for Voivod.

They melted my face off, yes, Voivod did.
So did the mushrooms, of course.

But what about Danzig, you say?
Well, I can't remember because if shit-memory serves me right, I had taken off w/ Swanky Jim (from Cum Dumpster) & his girlfriend Peg (from the Gories) to go smoke some hash at their place.
She later threw a knife at me, barely missing my foot.
Good times.
I guess I do remember a few things from that night, huh.

Listening to this set -nineteen fucking years later HOLY SHIT- I'd have to say it was a ripper for sure, and I gotta tell ya I really, really, miss bands like this, times like that, the old crew, etc.

Enjoy.

VOIVOD.

The term "technical" always seems to leave a weird taste in my mouth...

This release by Voivod could very well be their best in the fact that it expands on the whole thrash formula by introducing some melody to the riff-fest going down here.
Really cool tempo changes abound, and with all that going on, the songs are still really coherent - not just a bunch of shit strung together, ya know?

A record most definitely ahead of its time, bro.

If anyone is having trouble accessing the files via Link-Protector.com, just email me for the direct link.

I have been having trouble with the service lately myself, and even after trying to D/L it from my home & work computer (1 is a Mac & 1 is a PC) and I've tried Safari/Firefox/Explorer browsers as well. I keep checking my D/L count though and it seems some of you are still getting normal access to the files - WTF?

I've had trouble with this service in the past, but it usually cleared up after a day or two - this time it's been like 5 days or so.
Hence, the lack of updates.

I use Link-Protector to keep other "so-called" bloggers from stealing my uploads. Plus, it seems to keep the link itself from being deleted more often than not.

*UPDATE 12.18.2008*

The D/L links all seem to be working smoothly again after 6 days of wonkiness.

I had spoken w/ Link-Protector.com support about this issue, and it was actually MediaFire that wasn't playing nice w/ their service.
The problem seems to have cleared up now, but in any case, should you need me to send you a direct link, hit me up in the sidebar.
You'll find my contact info there, thanks.
