RUDIMENTARY PENI.

Not much needs to be said about the legacy of this band that still ain't finished...

Rudimentary Peni is one of those timeless punk bands that everyone seems to be a fan of, or refers to as an influence, yet no one even comes close to the way they sound.

That is a good thing.

What I offer to you today is also a good thing - the demos for the DEATH CHURCH album - such a classic - well fuck - ALL of their recorded output is classic, honestly, but um… can I use any more hyphens and parentheses and create more run-on sentences?

YES I CAN…

Not much bottom end in the mix, but all the fury & anguish is in this THIRTY YEAR-OLD RECORDING. I'll bet most of you were still a few years away from being mistakes in your dad's ball-sac when this came out...

Offered up today for your internet leeching consumption is a collection of (studio) outtakes from Samhain's "Magnum Opus" album, November Coming Fire.

The mix is loud, unbalanced, and awesome.

Honestly?
I'm always a fan of the rough mix / demo stuff more often than not, and this one is far more fun for me to listen to than the final product.

Fuzzy/overdriven chorus guitarage, plodding "soggy" drums, buried keyboard melodies, lots of howls & shit like that… no spray-on hair or cat litter shopping frenzies yet…

Everyone who visits here has a favorite era of Voivod (I'm assuming, of course).

I myself was weaned on those first three records in their discography, and it is hard for me to say those aren't my favorite, but when it comes down to it, I pretty much celebrate their entire recorded output.

I have a bunch of muddy-sounding live tapes from The Eighties that will always be some of my favorite musical things to listen to, and while Angel Rat is a record I don't pull out often, the demos for that recording have been quite compelling to these ears as of late. Gone from this one is the icy-screech of bitter cold Canadian thrash; in its place we find a spaced-out & discordant Die Kreuzen-meets-King Crimson vibe.

To put it in layman's terms,it kinda feels like you're riding out an opium high while floating along in arctic waters on a slab of sheered-off glacial ice, per se'…

MÖTLEY CRÜE.

Maybe it's the Darvocet hangover speaking right now - no work today, hurt my back - but to be honest with you, this collection of early Crüe sessions (1981-1982) is fucking raw, & fun as hell to listen to!

While "Too Fast for Love" is a tad poppy & slightly "candy-coated" in its red-and-black swagger-attack, these demos are back-alley dirty & chock full of passion! Vince Neil's vocals are screechy as hell, Mick's gutter-guitar tone sounds like it's coming from a $40 amp - the way it SHOULD sound, and the drums are big and booming, (or is that the bass)? Ha ha.

Overall the mix is excellent on these early takes - there's a muddy track or two, no big deal - and of course you'll hear a few mistakes/off-notes, etc. but the constant throughout is a fire that burned strong; long before they became the parody that they are today...
