TROUBLE.

This record came out at the right / wrong time…

In 1990, I was in the throws of some old-school American Hardcore hangover, trying not to fall into the newfangled "grunge thing" - (TAD ruled) - and then THIS RECORD showed up.
Fuckin' Xtian hippies into Sabbath? Huh?

In the end, they are just a fuckin' killer band who enjoyed getting fucked up & weren't really Xtian band at all.
Politics aside, this band was an anomaly for ANY scene at the time.
Still a weekly go-to record for me.

Why this record is not easier to find is beyond me - Rick Wartell & Bruce Franklin could possibly be one of the most under-the-radar guitar-slingin' bad-ass rock duos out there. Seriously, not a filler riff on this slab at all - the Rick Rubin production - just like on Slayer's 'South of Heaven" *ahem* "re-invented their sound" - and there is not a note wasted here. Sound-wise it's a time bomb; with the fat fucking mix, etc.

Get your Black Shape of Doom on already, willya?

FLESHGRIND.

It seems strange to me to see a lack of love for this recording (according to various reviews on certain renowned metal "archives", etc).

While these deranged death-heads from Chicago may not have been the most unique, they were definitely killing it fourteen years ago when they released this fury of a record. Hints of Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, etc.
Not "groovy" by any means, but there's a feeling of "laid-back brutality" going on here which I really dig. Sounds like they might be holding back on the bludgeoning tempo at times. Interesting…

NAKED RAYGUN.

Twenty-five years. Has it been that long?

Yep.

Twenty-five years ago :
a). I graduated from high school.
b). I smoked forty acres of weed a day.
c). I stayed up all night (most nights).
d). I was obsessed with skateboarding (still am).
e). I did everything I could to remain unemployed all summer long.
f). I would go road-trippin' at the mere mention of it.
g). This record came out.

It became a major part of my daily soundtrack for the next few years.

There's a few different / somewhat worthy bands that you could say have "The Chicago Sound", but THIS record is the pinnacle for me.
"All Rise" was titties too, but the guitar & bass tones on this slab cut both sharp & deep (as well as L-O-U-D), and it put these guys at or near the top of the (post?) hardcore heap..

Honestly? I haven't listened to this record in MANY years all the way through, & right now it's reminding me of this sick old Levi's denim vest I used to wear all the time - where the fuck is that thing anyways..?

Link removed due to bot-leeches at punksandskins.com

By the way...

The Lo-Res Viscera "hotel" is closed.
Mom had a lovely time & went back to MI, my NYC & ATL crews have gona back home as well.
The kitchen remodel is 93.4% done, the hangovers are becoming fewer in between, and things are starting to fall back in line, so hopefully - I know you've heard this before - the posts will be more frequent.

Thanks for stopping by, as always (all five of you), ha ha.

KUNGFU RICK.

Wonderful Mid-Western Powerviolence done right; dig around in the way back machine (search box) and you'll find more stuff by them.

Goofy at times? Sure.
Ferocious? Oh yes.
All in all you can't go wrong with these dudes.

MORGUE.

This choice slab of early Nineties (dare I say) classic death metal has gone unsung by the masses for the most part, but it hasn't left my car CD player for weeks now.
These dudes looked to all be in their early years of high school inn Chicagoland when they recorded this, and for my money, it "out-brutals" a mountain of today's so-called "brootal dethh" bands.
The production is decent for an indie release at the time, the drums are a bit up there in the mix, the riffs / solos aren't always groundbreaking, but there's no-frills here, just the sweet viscera at hand...

IMPULSE MANSLAUGHTER.

Another one of those great mid-western hardcore/thrash/crossover bands from the eighties that should have been appreciated more while they were around. A cult classic these days, this record still stands strong.

See for yourself.

KATHY MCGINTY.

One of the funniest (and saddest - in the case of most of the callers on here) prank call collections ever recorded. Erdman rules.

DEATH STRIKE.

Rad thrashy Midwestern death metal from the early days, it's Death Strike with the classic "Fuckin' Death".
Way ahead of their time if you ask me, many a band owes these Chicago Hessians some serious props!
This goes great next to your Repulsion and Possessed records...

D/L Death Strike - Fuckin' Death right here.
