HELLSHOCK.

More than just another "denim-cut covered-in-spikes band", Portland's Hellshock surpass the masses of D-beat / Crustcore clone bands by bringing this thing called "HEAVY" to the plate.

No "one-trick pony" here, folks - these guys lay it down fast & furious, yet are also fully capable of bludgeoning you with the doom-laden breakdown & a tight solo if need be.

PDX - for some odd reason - has always been a hotbed for killer crust bands, but these guys easily wear the crown for "superior rock power" in their neck of the Pacific Northwest.

GERIATRIC UNIT.

When your band is comprised of former members of Heresy & Iron Monkey, you know it's gonna be powerful & in-your-face scary. The only thing these guys have in common with their name is that they ain't no spring chickens - on the other hand, these guys spew corrosive thrashy hardcore all over the place.

Fast as fuck. Chaotic as fuck. A throat full of gravel. An ear full of pummel.
That's what these guys bring to the party. What you got?

You better look out…

CONCRETE SOX.

Legendary crusty-thrashcore from Nottingham, UK.

I'd be hard pressed to think YOU haven't heard of them before, so I'll spare you all the history lesson.
I will say though that they have been around since 1984, and plan to become active again in 2010.

Here is their first full-length release from back in 1985 - a year I found myself buried in a bag of weed, skateboards that were outfitted w/ Indy 169's or 215's, no intention of getting a job anytime soon - getting a fuckload of tattoos was more important, and this was part of the soundtrack to my becoming a grown-ass man screaming FUCK. THE. WORLD.

NULLA OSTA.

Here's some excellent blasting-crust from Croatia whose lineup features TWO bass players, and NO guitarist. There's a sick spastic drummer in there as well.
You'd never notice the lack of six-string motherfucking as the twin-bottom attack nullifies any lack of space in the music; it just works!

Full-on raging crust, and the Croatian tongue sounds excellent over top of it all.

HEVN.

Some solid d-beat-ish rockin' crusty hardcore from Oslo, Norway.

Somewhere along the way they gained a female singer from Seattle, WA who has a thick wail throughout - take that, guy who whined 'cuz I didn't post bands with women in them - here's yet another...

Really nice stuff; at times it gallops like Motörhead, and at others it breaks down into a "heavy-with-melody" kind of thing, reminding me a bit of old Germanic thrash-rippers like Inferno.

Yeah, it's good, and they packed it in before their time if you ask me.

Dig around on the 'webernet a little bit & you can track down all their goodies straight from their own site, I believe.

Check it out.

TERRORIZER.

Re-fucking-lentless...

(That's the name of the game when it comes to Terrorizer).

It's not like this is a rare or exclusive post for the L-R V - you can find it everywhere on the 'ol webernets - it's just that it is so fucking damn good (and I can't stop listening to it right now, must go to bed!) that I had to post it.

Jesse Pintado was a fucking beastly 6-string motherfucker whose talents in the deathgrindcrust realms go/went nearly unparalelled.
(Actually, the pedigree of this whole band is mind-boggling to say the least).

Enough of my gushing already, see for yourself if you aren't already the proud owner of said piece of grind history.

The L-R V will probably be somewhat inactive for the next week - just warning you now.

My brother is visiting from Detroit & I plan on taking the time to eat too much good food, drink more beer than I usually do, take a road trip to Tahoe or Santa Cruz for the day, and hopefully the weather will be killer for my son's 6th. birthday on Sunday in the park.

In my abscence, I suggest you peruse the archive - or better yet - VISIT THE BLOGS IN THE LINK SIDEBAR!

Anyone who is listed there is at least as on their game as I am - these are daily visits for me - and it ain't just anybody who gets a link from me, pal!
They all put forth a true effort at representing the bands they post, so the least you could do when you get blessed with some wicked (and free!) new tunes is drop a comment and say thanks/hello, etc. We all really appreciate it.

Enjoy the music!

PRESTO?

Some excellent Brazilian Hardcore (they always do HC well, don't they?) that pretty much runs the gamut of all things old-school whether we're talking hardcore, thrash, crust, etc.
These guys know how to mix it up well without sounding like are emulating anyone.

I wish I could tell you more about their history as I don't know much about them - (especially like, "what's up with that name?") - but I will tell you that they have been kicking the ass of my ears for the past week or so at 7am whilst driving in the Battle Toaster on my way in to work each morning...

Excellent riffs, nice guitar tone, rabid drumming, and those high-and-low back-and-forth crust-inspired vocals? You'll find them all here, check it out!

HIATUS.

Man, I been pulling out the old shit lately, huh?

Here's the final output from one of the greatest crust bands ever; full of raging hooks and all-around power, Hiatus did it like no one else.

(It's really hard to find much on the web about these guys, maybe you could hook me up with more of their stuff - I'd like that).

ACEPHALIX.

Some of my old partners-in-crime who employ a nice mixture of all things related to Motorhead/Japanese crustcore/blackened death/first-generation HC/Nor-Cal thrash.

I'm having a hard time writing this - probably due to the fact that they fucking slayed 'em all live at Bender's last night.
The copious amounts of booze involved certainly didn't help...

SANCTUM.

Heavily-blackened "War Crust" out of Seattle WA.
Damn shame they ain't still around; to my ears it seemed like they were just starting to really gel as a unit.
Great riffs and a stark-as-fuck sound that made them stand apart from the legions of the dirty & clad-in-black.

Get this if you don't already have it.

Have a great weekend - I'll be laying up in a small beachfront cottage (complete w/ hot tub) in Stinson Beach, CA all weekend.
Supposed to be 70 degrees and sunny - IN JANUARY, NO LESS!

Ahhhhh.... Global Warming....

SELFISH.

You know, when it comes to the whole D-Beat/Crust thing, I am a true fan.
I really am.
The problem is, most bands of said genre don't bring anything new or original to the table.

I guess that's part of the formula - and that's fine and all - but there are a few bands that do set themselves apart from the rest of the back-patch bands.

Selfish is one of them.

These Finlandia rockers mesh creatively heavy riffs, sick leads, and rad "gang-along" choruses.
On top of that, they break away from the pack with COLOR IMAGERY - and it works!

Selfish - Cause Pain

(If you have anything else by them besides this or the "Tear Silence Into Pieces" Split, PLEASE SEND ME A D/L LINK - thanks!)

MUGA.

I wish I could tell you more about this thrashy/metallic darkened-hardcore crew from Japan, but web presence is nearly non-existent.
I will tell you that they fucking kick ass with their solid (and fresh) approach to hardcore without all the usual cliches that come with the genre.

If anyone has any more info, or better cover art, or images, or just more music in general from these guys (and a girl) please share, willya?

MÄSSMÖRD.

Swedish (heavy) crustcore featuring male / female vocals (try and guess who's who) that somehow stays away from most of the usual crusty trappings.
Quite melodic without being pussy, and while they do venture into the realm of "D-Beat", they somehow pull it off without sounding like "that one Discharge song".

Good shit that I just can't seem to stop listening to lately.

Mässmörd - Unleashed

Now playing: Medication Time - Blasphemy's Child

7.09.2008

AVSKUM.

Tight, heavy and relentless "D-Beat" - what a pussy-sounding name for such a tough-guy genre of punk, huh?) - from Sweden.
These guys have been at the forefront of the crustcore scene since 1982, and are still killing it today.

(This record was sounding really fucking good tonight during "beer drinking practice", so I thought I'd share)...

Raging crusty/thrashy/metallic hardcore from the Great White North.
A dude from Voivod did the cover art.
It's good, check it out.

CRUCIFIX.

Real street punk from the heydays of the S.F. scene - back when you made your own shirts and stuff.

Flying V's still kick ass...

Crucifix - Exhibit A.

5.26.2008

SKEW WHIFF.

Absoloutely stellar raw and dirty metallic crustcore from these Belgians (and one U.S. ex-pat). Crunchy / chunky power chords, galloping thunderous drumming, abrasive over-the-top screaming - it's all here!

Wish these guys still existed...

Skew Whiff - Taedium Vitae

ZYGOTE.

While I wasn't a huge Amebix fan (suprised to hear that, aren't you?), Zygote came next for most of the members of afforementioned band and they fucking kick my ass.
Wish they would have lasted longer than they did.
Amazing fucking album!

Zygote - A Wind of Knives
